Additional factors to consider when designing an earthing system:

  • Soil Resistivity surveys to determine ground resistivity.
  • Soil moisture contents – more moisture reduces soil resistances
  • Chemical composition of soil – certain salts and minerals affect soil resistivity.
  • Temperature – if the ground is frozen its resistance is much higher.
  • The extent of any buried services which could affect the earth termination network.
  • Details of metallic service pipes, rails, tanks, etc., which may need grounding to the earthing system to prevent the danger of side flashing.
  • Area available for installing earth electrodes.
